“Her life, her marriage, her children. Her friends and her work.”
In this quote, the author used repetition. The use of repetition put emphasis on Allie. It put focus on that this conversation is about her, and no one else. It makes sure that Noah was telling Allie everything about herself.

“Lightning cut the sky outside. Fire danced on white-hot wood, spreading the heat. October rain sheeted itself against the windows, drowning out all other sounds.”
Personification is used in this quote. This creates a lively image that fits perfectly with the mood of the situation, that is Noah and Ali are alone in their own world. The use of this figurative language makes the dullness of objects disappear. It also makes everything seems poetic in a way.

At the beginning of the story, Allie was like a little puppy. She was obedient to her family. As she grew to become a teenager, she started to rebel against her parents will to date Noah. She fell head-over-heels for him. When they were forced to be parted, Allie’s heart was torn in two. After she has grown up as an adult, her life was boring as if there was no meaning to living anymore. She was a wounded lost bird. However, everything changed when she saw a post about Noah on the newspaper. Her heart lit up with a smile, packed her bags and left for a journey. When they were finally reunited, Allie was hit by a swarm of emotions. At the end, she chose to follow her heart and stayed with Noah.
I have used simile, personifications, hyperbole, and metonymy.

Quotes
“First, I want you. I want us. I love you and I always have. But I also want a happy ending without hurting anyone. And I know that if I stayed, people would be hurt.”
This quote from Allie is very significant as this determines how she chooses between Noah and her fiancé. This explains her internal conflict. She does not know who to choose, for Noah is the one she wants to be with, but she does not wanting to hurt Lon’s and her family’s feelings. This illustrates the climax of the story.

“I’m saying it because I love you now and I always have. More than you can imagine.”
This quote by Noah describes his own eternal conflict. He wishes nothing more than to be with Allie, but he also understands not to push or rush her decision. He knows he loves her more than Allie thinks he does, for that he is proud of himself; he recognizes this as one of his best qualities. By saying “more than you can imagine”, he tries to tell Allie that he loves her more than she knows, and to convince her to choose him. It also shows that he respects her choice, but he wants her to pick himself over her fiancé.

Headings

“Lon awaits in hotel room Allie as she gathers her emotions and thoughts.”
As Lon figures out Allie’s real reason for her visit to New Bern, he takes a surprise visits to her hotel and waits for her to come back. It shows that now in the story, Allie physically has to choose between Lon and Noah: to either go back to the hotel where Lon is waiting, or go back to Noah’s house. This also explains that Allie is an emotional wreck as she cries her way back to her hotel. As she fixes her makeup and hair, she experiences her conflicted feelings to their greatest degree.

“Noah and Allie snuggle besides the fireplace as they reminisce about the past.”
As they spend more time with each other, Allie’s mind battles grows harder. Those memories are only too vivid to make her decision harder. As they speak more about the best, their relationship, the time they spent together, and their feelings, Allie’s love for Noah grows stronger.

“Allie speaks with tenderness as she explains to Noah he is ‘the only man’”
She finally admits that Noah is the only man she has ever loved and will ever love. This takes the conflict to its climax because she realizes a tough decision lies ahead and it is hard to not choose Noah; but she also realizes her responsibility as a wife, daughter, and a socially ranked person.

“Allie arouses sexually as she hears Noah breathing hard”
This illustrates how her internal conflict grows as she spends more time with Noah. She realizes how Noah makes her feel, a special feeling that she has not felt since they parted. This is a feeling that her fiancé Lon does not give her when they are together. This is a first sign that she might still love Noah more than she thinks, and she might have to choose between the two men.

“Noah sinks into deep thoughts as their hands interlock”
this describes Noah’s internal conflict, as he wants to be with Allie, but does not want to put her in an uncomfortable situation. He thinks about their time spent together, and realizes he needs her in his life. He realizes at this moment, that he has to have her; if he doesn’t his soul is incomplete. He also senses that Allie might still be in love with him. This puts him in a conflicted situation as he is not sure whether she is feeling the same about him, and whether she will choose him over Lon, and their unclear future.

“I am nothing special, of this I am sure. I am a common man with common thoughts and I've led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me, this has always been enough..” – Noah
This quote shows how much of a humble man he is. Common is a repetitive word in the quote; he puts emphasis on the word ‘common’ because that is all thinks of himself. He does not realize his other positive characters because he only sees himself as a common man. He knows he loves with all his heart and does not regret loving Allie.

“I love you. I am who I am because of you. You are every reason, every hope, and every dream I've ever had, and no matter what happens to us in the future, everyday we are together is the greatest day of my life. I will always be yours. ”
This quote shows that Noah is a hopeless romantic. It is evident that He thinks a lot of Allie. He devotes all his thought to her existence, and he revolves his life around her. In his mind, Allie shaped him into the man he is today. He hangs on to the pass, when they dated. He is infatuated with the thought of her. It is almost as if he is haunted by her, and the past- the summer they spent together. It also shows that he is not a demanding person. He is willing to give her the space she needs, and give her time to think over their relationship.

If Noah had a personalized license plate, it would be ‘ALLIE’.
Since he revolves his life around Allie, it is predictable that he uses a license plate of her name to honour their memories. It would also be to a way to keep the memories alive.

Quotations

“It was early October 1946, ……” [p.7]
It gave out the date of when the story started. It also gives significance to the fact that he is a returning veteran, which shapes a large part of his story.

“It wasn’t that they didn’t like him – it was that he was from a different class, too poor, and they would never approve if their daughter became serious with someone like him.” [p.25]
This quote suggests the class system in the 1930s. The typical judgmental state of mind of wealthy families is a big theme in this novel, especially because it shapes the story as the way it is. It suggests how Allie’s parents did not approve of Noah despite of his good manners and humble personality.

Physical objects

Faded jeans
It suggests that Noah is a very modest person, who does not give much thought about his appearance.

Sweet tea
Instead of drinking liquor, he chooses to drink sweet tea. It suggests that Noah is not young and reckless anymore; instead he is at the age to settle down and have a family.

Rocker
Rocker seems to be a symbol of a person of older age. Again, it suggests Noah’s age.

Tools
It suggests that Noah is a very hardworking person. He chose to fix up the house on his own, instead of to hire people to do it for him.
